What is Box Lacrosse? Often called "the fastest game on two feet," box lacrosse is played in a hockey arena (on concrete or turf) after the ice is removed and in outdoor boxes. It is the national summer sport of Canada.
When does the season run? The season (League games) typically begins in early April and runs through late June. Provincial Championships for qualifying teams (U13 and older) usually take place in July. Practices may start as early as February or March depending on age group and location availability.
How often are games and practices? For most divisions, you can expect one to two practices and two games (one home, one away) per week. Younger divisions (U7) often focus more on local "in-house" sessions to minimize travel.
2. Registration & Eligibility
How do I know which association to join? In BC, minor lacrosse is boundary-based. You must register with the association in the municipality where you reside. In some cases, transfer requests to other associations can be requested, but are not guaranteed.
What age groups are there? Teams are made up of Co-ed teams, where girls are welcome to play with the boys. There are also girl only teams.
Divisions are based on the child's age as of December 31st of the playing year:
U7: Ages 5–6
U9: Ages 7–8
U11: Ages 9–10
U13: Ages 11–12
U15: Ages 13–14
U17: Ages 15–16
U22 (Female): Ages 17–21
Are there female only teams? Yes, but it is based on registration numbers and if there are enough to put a team together. In cases where females register and there isn't enough to put a team together, they will be "released" (Transfered) to another association to play with that team for the year. The association will work with you to ensure they find a place to play.
What documents are required for new players? All associations require a copy of the player's Birth Certificate and Proof of Residency (e.g., a utility bill or property tax notice).
3. Equipment Requirements
What gear does my child need? Mandatory equipment includes:
Helmet: CSA approved with a lacrosse face mask.
Mouth Guard: Must be worn at all times.
Gloves: Lacrosse-specific (hockey gloves are often permitted at U7/U9).
Slash Guards: Arm and bicep protection (mandatory for U11 and up).
Kidney/Back Guards: Critical for box lacrosse.
Jock/Jill: Protective cup.
Lacrosse Stick: Sized appropriately for the child's height.
Footwear: Standard running shoes or court shoes.
Does the club provide any gear? Game jerseys, shorts and 'dry fit' tshirt are provided with your reg fees. Game Jerseys are for games only and are to be returned at the end of the season. We also have a program to exchange, trade gear or borrow gear, however supplies are limited.
Box Lacrosse: The club provides all goalie equipment – helmet and mask, chest pad, pants, jocks/jills, leg guards, gloves and stick.
Field Lacrosse: All goalie gear + defensive sticks (longer than the player sticks)
4. Costs & Financial Support
How much are registration fees? Fees vary by age group. Early bird discounts are available until January 31st. Find out more info here.
Team Fees: There are additional team fees above registration fees which are allocated toward tournament registrations, coach gifts, end of year wind up and other misc expenses. These will be discussed with parents by the manager and coaches earlier on in the season and are unique to each team depending on how they wish to proceed as a team. Additional information can be found lower on our Registration page.
Is there financial assistance? Yes! KidSport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart will help families cover registration costs. If you would like further information, please reach out to vmlaregistrar@vancouverlacrosse.com
Is it safe? While lacrosse is a contact sport, minor lacrosse has strict rules regarding "checking" and conduct, especially at younger ages. Referees are trained to prioritize player safety.
